A Thrilling First Bow Hunt: Triumph at Fancher Ranch

As the dawn of bow season unfurled its vibrant hues over Fancher Ranch, I embarked on what would become a memorable and exhilarating experience - my first bow hunt. Armed with determination and my trusty Mission Crossbow, I nestled into the blind, heart brimming with anticipation.

The morning air was crisp, the world around me waking up. Hours ticked by in a meditative silence, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves. Then, as if on cue, deer began to emerge in the clearing. Among them, a buck caught my eye. I carefully positioned myself for the shot, but a sudden clink against the chair sent him darting into the woods. My heart sank. I had blown my chance—or so I thought.

Refusing to be deterred, I made swift adjustments to my setup, vowing not to repeat the mistake. Patience is a hunter's virtue, and mine was soon rewarded. The same buck reappeared, cautiously stepping out from the cedar trees. My crossbow raised, I took aim, but then, a twist in the tale - a larger buck emerged from behind. I swiftly recalibrated my aim towards this new, majestic target.

But fate had other plans. The feeder's sudden noise startled them, and they vanished into the woods. Disappointment washed over me. There I sat, replaying the moment in my mind, the sun inching closer to the horizon.

Just when I thought the day was lost, the first buck re-emerged, stepping out to my left with mere minutes of daylight left. He stood within range, but his lifted front leg obstructed a clear shot. My breath steadied, my focus narrowed, and as he finally stepped forward, I released the bolt with a blend of hope and precision.

The bolt struck true, and the buck bounded away. Twilight was upon me, but there was just enough light to send a quick text to Clay before his phone died. After giving the buck time to settle, I began the tracking process. The Lumenok crossbow bolts proved invaluable, leading me to a robust blood trail. It wasn't long before I found him, nestled in the heavy cedars about 30 yards away.

The drag back to the clearing was arduous, but as I emerged, Clay arrived with the truck, a perfect timing. The satisfaction of the successful hunt, the pride in providing for our family, it was all there in that moment under the fading light.

As we drove back, the freezer-bound bounty in tow, I reflected on the day's events. Every emotion, every challenge, and the ultimate triumph, it was all part of the beautiful tapestry that is life at Fancher Ranch. This was more than just a hunt; it was a testament to patience, adaptability, and the sheer joy of the outdoors.

Until the next adventure,

Dr. Shana Fancher
